Things that matter to us

Things that matter to us

Some things really matter and are at the foundation of every decision we make as a company. We use these values (practicality, integrity, celebrating differences, sustainability, and humor) to keep ourselves going in the right direction. And make sure we are having fun while we do it.
  • Practicality

Our products don’t just look and smell good, they also work. Whether it is washing your hands, your hair or your body our soaps and shampoos will leave you feeling clean and looking your best. You should always use the pretty soaps. We will make more so you can have the beauty of a gorgeous bar and the cleansing/moisturizing that you need. Life is too short to use boring soap

There are lots of shampoo bars out there. Some of them are even just soap marketed as shampoo which can leave your hair feeling rough and dry since they aren’t really meant for hair. There is no point is using shampoo or conditioner bars that leave you hair feeling icky just so you can say you used a bar without plastic. You deserve both. The high quality ingredients in our products are the same as is found in fancy salon brands of liquid shampoo and conditioner, the big difference is that we don’t add water, so we don’t have to put it in a plastic bottle. You add the water when you use it. This means you can have all of the good stuff and none of the plastic. Your hair will love you. So invest in your hair, it is the crown you never take off.

  • Integrity

We stand behind everything we do. Every ingredient has been carefully vetted. Every process has been through iterations to make sure you consistently get the quality you deserve. You can be sure that we considered the environmental, social, and ethical impact of what we put into our products. We want you to feel as good about our products as we do about our ingredients.

We focus on Fair Trade materials when we are getting ingredients from developing areas. We want to know that the farmers and processors of our cocoa butter, coconut oil and shea butter are getting good wages and have a say in their practices to create sustainability and to bring positive change to their communities.
Our Shea Butter comes from Fair Tale Ghana which employs women and gives their kids the opportunity to go to school. The business was founded to be ethical which means you can feel good about their shea butter going into your hair. During the pandemic every package came with a handmade drum key chain to help support the artisans that rely on tourism. That is just one way that they go beyond their products and try to help the entire community.

Our coconut oil and coconut milk come from The Coconut Cooperative who work with farmers that promote ethical, fair trade coconut production processes. Sustainable and transparent farming practices are the foundation of their fair trade coconut operations. The Coconut Cooperative engages in regular communication with every level of their supply chain to promote improvements and share best practices.

There are concerns about child labor being used in mining mica that is used for coloring soap and cosmetic products. All of our mica suppliers ensure that their mica comes from ethical sources that don’t use child labor.

We review the practices of the business we work with to make sure that they are up to our high standards. We want every level of our business from procuring raw ingredients to where we put our profits to work toward making the world a better place.

  • Celebrating Differences

Since we all march to the beat of our own drummer we totally understand that everyone has something about them that is worth celebrating. We bring our whole selves into the work we do. We look for ways to learn from others every single day because everyone has something to teach us.

It is those beautiful imperfections that make everyone unique and worth learning from. Our family includes people who are disabled, LGBTQ+ and neurodiverse. All of those different experiences make our lives richer. You end up more open and accepting of people who are different from you and you see the beauty of their lives and how they rise to meet their challenges. It also helps us recognize when to give ourselves grace for our own imperfections.

Our products are handmade which means that they come with imperfections as well and that is part of their beauty.

  • Sustainability

Our planet will be here long after we are gone but we want it to be a healthy planet. So we consider the sustainability of the production of all our ingredients. If we find something is not as sustainable as we thought we will reformulate to give you the same great experience using our soap and hair products with a better ecological foot print.

The olive oil we use in our products is gown in the United States using sustainable practices. There are lots of sources of olive oil. Some of them may be less expensive, but it is important to us to make sure that our olive oil is harvested in an environmentally positive way.

We recently made the switch from avocado oil to more sustainable sunflower oil. We consider not just price but how things are produced when choosing our suppliers.

We use Shopify to house our online store and use ShopPay for processing our orders because part of their mission is to fund entrepreneurs who are working to reduce climate change through their Sustainability Fund. Shopify has also partnered with WeForest to plant trees and increase biodiversity to protect water.

We also partner with Ecologi to plant a tree for every order through the Eden Reforestation Project. It is important to us that tree planting efforts are done in a way that will restore the local environment and improve the economy going into the future for the people who live there.

  • Sense of Humor

Life is too short to be serious all the time. We can have fun while we make the world a better place because sometimes we are all a little salty. And that’s totally fine.

If you’ve ever spent time with us, you know that we have a dry sense of humor. It is our defense mechanism for living in a world that needs improvement. It is also our way to connect with people through laughter. We love puns and double meanings and a little bit of self-deprecating humor. We believe in punching up at those in power and never taking the cheap shot. We want you to feel included and crack a smile when you see us as we truly are.
